Project Update: Strecker Cancer Center
Memorial Health System, a major HAWA client, recently began construction on their new Strecker Cancer Center, which will replace the existing cancer center located on the main campus. The development of the new center was intended to expand Memorial’s oncology program and services to a broader region. The 80,000-square-foot, two-story facility was designed in two phases: first, the core and shell, and then tenant fit-out. HAWA provided mechanical design services for HVAC, plumbing and fire protection, along with electrical design services for power, lighting, fire alarm and low-voltage systems pathways. Additionally, the MEP infrastructure was designed to accommodate potential future I-2 occupancy.
The first floor will contain a women’s health center, an education and resource center, and radiation therapy and treatment capabilities, including a tomotherapy vault, a linear accelerator vault and a computer tomotherapy (CT). It also will include a Cyberknife vault, which is a radiation delivery device that offers greater precision in targeting tumors. The second floor will consist of infusion and chemotherapy bays, exam rooms and a pharmacy. The building will have a two-story lobby and connector between the Cancer Center and the existing 807 building that serves the medical oncology function.
As project manager and lead electrical engineer, I’d like to thank my design team for their hard work: Devora Abreu (lighting designer), Andy Fouss (lead mechanical engineer), Declan Byrne (plumbing and fire protection designer), Trevor Kuhlman (HVAC designer) and Hunter Arey (mechanical equipment and pharmacy designer). Their creative design solutions, proactive problem solving and commitment to this project are among the reasons why Memorial Health System has trusted HAWA with nearly twenty projects since we started working with them in 2015.
