Helping Clients Help Others: Quantum Health’s Relocation and Expansion

Healthcare is a complex and rapidly changing industry, which can make it difficult for patients and medical professionals to navigate. Because it’s HAWA’s goal to improve the end user experience with our designs, we were pleased to partner with Quantum Health, whose mission is to provide a guided and simplified healthcare experience for people to get the care they need, when they need it.  

Founded in 1999, Quantum Health is currently in the process of relocating from Worthington, Ohio, to their newly renovated 280,000-square-foot headquarters in Dublin, Ohio. In addition to this new headquarters, they have purchased a 214,000-square-foot facility just south of the building to allow for their projected growth over the next three to five years.

The first through fourth floors of Quantum Health headquarters are laid out as an open office design, with private conference rooms and offices scattered throughout. The lower level will consist of large meeting and training rooms, in addition to a renovated kitchen, servery and coffee café.

HAWA has provided mechanical and electrical system design for this expansion and renovation, which began in late 2019. The existing building HVAC infrastructure consists of a single large air handler located in the penthouse providing air to floors one through four, three smaller air handlers located in the lower level, and a centralized chiller/boiler plant that provides chilled water and steam to cool and heat multiple buildings on the property. The existing infrastructure was maintained for the most part, with only minor modifications required: new VAV and ductwork to accommodate new spaces and rooms that were not in the original facility.

The existing 4,000A normal (utility) power electrical infrastructure was maintained as well. The branch circuit panels were reused, modified and extended on each floor as necessary to accommodate new circuitry. However, the existing 450-kW diesel generator was not adequately sized for the projected (optional standby) loads desired by Quantum Health, therefore a new 1250-Kw generator was provided. Additionally, the existing generator and single automatic transfer switch did not meet current National Electric Code requirements for emergency systems, so replacing the emergency generator allowed HAWA to rework the existing emergency branches and bring the building up to code. The standby loads consisted of egress lighting, fire alarm, employee computer workstations, network equipment, storm and sewage pumps, and minimal HVAC within the existing building.

As this project nears its completion date, we are proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish with our partners at Quantum Health, Buckeye Power Sales, Denier, Turner Construction Company and BHDP Architecture.
