BEHIND THE POCKET PROTECTOR: NIC DANEMAN

Nic Daneman, because he never gets bored with design, accepted a challenge from Collin Wheeler to replicate a vintage wooden model of a vertical turning lathe made in 1986. Armed with an Ender 3 V2 printer, Nic recreated the intricate machinery, discovering the complexities of keeping the print structurally sound while printing it all as one piece. For him, 3D printing is a learning process, highlighting the gap between what should work in the design phase vs. how it turns out. While printing spinning gears, he learned that rather than just creating a seemingly functional design in Blender, he had to control the print speed to keep the teeth from getting distorted, starting slowly and increasing speed with each layer. Nic not only creates but also learns through his hobby, finding joy in overcoming the challenges of each new print, highlighting the stark contrast between design expectations and printing realities.
